About the Owner

My Journey from Laborer to Foreman in the Waterproofing Industry

Entering the waterproof coating industry at 18, I was inspired by my family's strong tradition in the field. Starting as a laborer, I eagerly gained hands-on experience and dedicated myself to mastering the trade. My hard work led to a promotion to journeyman, where I deepened my understanding of waterproofing techniques and eventually became a foreman, overseeing projects and training teams for nearly two decades.

After 20 years, I transitioned to a role as Field Superintendent and Safety Officer, focusing on managing operations and fostering a culture of safety. For over three and a half years, I emphasized the importance of safety protocols, ensuring every team member returned home safely after each project.

With 25 years of experience, I took a leap of faith to start my own waterproofing company in San Diego, CA. My vision was to implement best practices and innovative solutions, creating a business rooted in quality, reliability, and excellence. Today, I lead a company that reflects my lifelong dedication to the industry, looking forward to the challenges ahead and the opportunity to make a positive impact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at hydroweathersealants@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Our team at the Hydro Weather Sealants  provides a wide range of professional waterproofing services, including deck restoration, flashing metal, deck coatings, traffic coatings, epoxy floors, and caulking services. Our expert team is dedicated to delivering high-quality solutions to protect your construction projects from the elements.

  1. Regular Cleaning: Sweep the deck often to clear away debris, and give it a wash with soap and water every few months to prevent dirt buildup.
  2. Inspect for Damage: Look for loose boards, cracks, or signs of rot. Fix issues immediately to prevent further damage.
  3. Sealing and Staining: Every 12 to 18 months, apply a wood sealant or stain to shield against moisture and UV rays. Use products suited for your deck material.
  4. Remove Stains Promptly: Clean spills and stains right away with appropriate cleaners to avoid permanent marks.
  5. Trim Nearby Vegetation: Keep plants and shrubs trimmed to prevent moisture buildup and reduce debris falling on the deck.
  6. Winter Preparation: Clear snow and ice during winter, and consider using a protective cover in harsh weather.
  7. Check for Pests: Watch for signs of insect infestations, especially with wooden decks, and treat as necessary.

By following these steps, you can keep your deck patio in good shape for years to come.

Sealing your deck once a year is a good general guideline. Depending on the condition of your deck, you might adjust this, but always ensure you re-seal and stain at least every three years.

We recommend applying at least two coats to ensure durability and UV protection. Once the deck is dry, repeat the coating. Use less oil on the second coat, as the wood won't absorb as much and it could pool and become sticky. Allow a minimum of two hours for drying.

In construction, the seven most common types of sealants are:

  • Water based Latex. Popular for residential use because of the ease of application
  • Acrylic: These are UV stable making them suitable for exterior applications.
  • Butyl: They have poor resistance to abrasion and struggle to accommodate movements that introduce shearing forces. They are not suitable for demanding building applications.
  • Polysulfide: Excellent flexibility even at low temperatures with little shrinkage or UV degradation, and can be used for underwater applications.
  • Silicone: Has excellent thermal resistance, good dynamic movement capability and good adhesion. They can be easily vandalized and tend to collect dirt.
  • Polyisobutylenes: Have similar properties to natural rubber but with improved durability, good resistance to chemical attack, and have very low permeability.
  • Polyurethane: Adhere well to the majority of different surfaces with little substrate preparation, and are generally the go-to choice for contractors. They have excellent resilience to abrasion and shear forces as well as having strong adhesion and movement capability.

Silicone caulk stands up to extremes in temperature changes and can last up to 20 years when properly applied. Cleanup for silicone caulk requires solvents instead of water. Used outdoors in areas exposed to direct sunlight or rain, silicone helps the seal last longer.

They prevent water from passing through and repel it to the outside. A silicone sealant can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years, depending on the quality chosen and the location of the caulking in relation to the elements, such as the sun and high winds.
